More Taxes

More Taxes

In a surprise development our elected officials have announced their intention to create a new tax. After years of abuse and misappropriation of our tax dollars, they’re in such a deep hole with our money that they’ll have trouble paying the extortion the civil service labor unions, and other power brokers who pull their strings require of them before the elections later this year. They’ll have trouble spending enough money to fill the bank accounts of their personal nonprofit organizations run by their friends and illegitimate relations. The back room deals and obligations to the labor organizations are in jeopardy of default because the tax dollars are not flowing in as expected. There are some people in this country who object to being taxed into the poorhouse. When a state has the balls to tax citizens to a level that it doesn’t pay to earn a living, then it’s time to move to another state. Many citizens move from a high tax state to a low or no tax state. When it’s too expensive for a business to make a living in a state or to tolerate the regulations required by mind numb bureaucrats then it’s time for that business to leave and operate in a more business friendly environment. Maybe another state or maybe another country. Taxes are something to despise and to avoid, as long as you avoid them legally. Sometimes we vote with our feet.

A number of years ago some of our elected empty suits felt we could raise a lot of new tax revenue by creating a luxury tax for people who buy expensive boats. What a good idea that was. The intent of the shallow, elected empty suits was to punish those who enjoyed success through their own hard work to have earned enough disposable income to buy a boat. Since they had that much disposable income to buy that many boats, they could add a few thousand extra shekels for the tax man to provide more of our tax dollars for them to abuse and misspend. Unfortunately, the successful with the extra disposable income are not as shallow and gullible as the elected empty suits.

The unintended consequences of this luxury tax was a significant drop in boat sales, layoffs in the boat manufacturing industry, and fewer people using boats for recreation. This tax successfully crippled an entire industry for a period of time. No income from the luxury tax and less in tax revenues because of the layoffs and loss of business in areas that used to thrive and earn money. Don’t you just hate when that happens?

The empty suits have a new plan, one that’s intended to have an additional benefit. They will attempt to punish whoever chooses to drink sugary drinks, by taxing them. When you feel the need to consume an energy drink, or a soda, or juice of some kind, that is taxed because of its sugar content, you’ll pay the price for the product and a penalty for trying to be happy in a free market economy and purchase a legal item to satisfy your thirst. Again the taxes expected from this extortion are intended to fill the gap in our budget where the elected empty suits made promises to those who make the decisions for them. They were expected to pass a budget and redistribute our tax dollars where the elected officials were instructed to send them, but the revenues have not lived up to the greedy expectations of those who control our elected empty suits. This sugary drink tax is expected to help fill the gap.

Let me scratch my crystal balls and see if I can anticipate some possible unintended consequences. The sale of sugary drinks will fall off because it’s not worth the money to buy them after you add the empty suit’s extortion to them. A black market for sugary drinks will creep into the area to allow sales without the extortion intended by the empty suits. When possible sugary drinks will be purchased legally outside of the jurisdiction that attempts to punish those irresponsible enough to drink sugary drinks. The area immediately outside of taxable area will see a significant increase in the sale of these criminal products. The states and communities outside of the control of the empty suits will enjoy increased sales and increased tax revenues due to this extra demand for these products in the areas not affected by the extortion. The free market economy at work again. People will drive miles out of their way to save 25 cents a gallon for gas. Why wouldn’t they do that for a Big Gulp?

They lying thieving men and women of easy virtue in a feeble attempt to follow the instructions of the power brokers who pull their strings will be scratching their heads wondering where all the new revenues went.

I have a suggestion, but I don’t think they’ll follow it or even understand it. Stop spending my F’n money! Cut my F’n Taxes, and stop running for office!

I wouldn’t let you run a local whore house, let alone our government.
