Government Shutdown

Government Shutdown

The government shutdown that we just witnessed would have puzzled our Founding Fathers. They created a system of government where the Federal Government was very limited and not a part of our everyday lives.

The Federal Government was supposed to answer to the states and be accountable to the people. The Senate was originally made up of Senators elected by state legislatures with the purpose of allowing the states to have more input into the government. We passed the 17th Amendment to the Constitution in April of 1913 allowing the direct election of US Senators by popular vote that removed an important safeguard that allowed the states to keep the Government in check.

The Federal Government was supposed to act as an agent of the States in a few clearly defined circumstances. The Bill of Rights included the 10th Amendment which reinforced this concept “Limits the powers of the federal government to those delegated to it by the Constitution”.

Our Founding Fathers were suspicious of government and built checks and balances to maintain control over the Federal Government. President Washington said that government is “a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”

The government shutdown was coupled with a serious debt problem. The debt ceiling had to be increased to allow our federal government to continue its irresponsible spending. We destroyed the checks and balances to keep our federal government under control so now it is running amok spending money we don’t have to keep itself in power.

It’s bad enough being led by tyrants, but it’s embarrassing being led by such short sighted and incompetent tyrants. Where are we going with all this debt? What is the goal? The economy is struggling to keep itself out of a recession and the spending just keeps on going.
No one with an ounce of economic sense believes we can tax our way back to solvency, so that’s not an answer. The elected empty suits never discuss or consider cutting any spending.
The last time we made a feeble attempt to cut spending the elected cowards created a super committee of cowards to address spending with what was believed to be a doomsday consequence. The doomsday consequence was designed to coerce them to make real and substantial cuts. That’s what led to the sequester.

They serial spenders in Washington DC were convinced the sequester would cause the sky to fall, but it was barely noticed. The question becomes are they so stupid they believe the world will end if the spending stopped or do they think we are so stupid we will believe anything they tell us.

They are threatening to create another super committee of incompetents to do the same thing. If they offer any spending cuts I will be surprised. I would also be surprised if they create another sequester to safeguard any inaction. It bit them in the ass last time and will again so they will avoid that possibility.

We are electing men and women who do not feel an obligation to the tax payers. They feel an obligation to elected office. We must put the safeguards in place that the Founding Fathers created for us. The wrong people are running the government. We are the victims of the low information voters and elected empty suits who cater to them.

Vote for men and women of accomplishment who have integrity and loyalty to the tax payers who voted for them.

Stop reelecting pigs wearing lipstick!
