The Fiscal Cliff and Our Country’s Leaders
At the very last minute legislators have cobbled together a bill that will allow us to hit bottom after we fall over the fiscal cliff at a less than fatal velocity.
They didn’t solve any of our long term problems, they have not put in place a plan that will turn the tide from our certain financial ruin as a country, and they have not done anything that will raise their credibility in any positive way.
Let’s start with a reminder of how the fiscal cliff came to exist. The very same players in this fiscal fiasco failed to do their job adequately when they raised the debt ceiling in the summer of 2011. They formed a committee (due to a lack of courage on any individual or group of politicians) to make the recommendations that would be necessary to do the right things the right way.
That committee failed at everything it was charged to accomplish. The fiscal cliff was supposed to be the negative consequence of their failure to act. That committee failed to act, the president, The House, and the Senate failed to take action until the very last minute (actually even later than the very last minute) and then they cobbled together something that would be graded as an F Plus or a D Minus if an honest person were to evaluate their product.
The fiscal cliff was a Politician made crisis born out of their cowardice and incompetence and caused them to face another crisis that they were incapable of facing for a number of reasons.
The first reason the elected officials responsible for our country’s financial well being disappointed us is that they lack a clear vision of who they work for and who they answer to.
They lack the courage and integrity to accomplish tasks that low to mid level managers across this country accomplish on a daily basis in their spare time. The private sector requires managers to minimize costs and maximize profit on a daily basis. Waste, mismanagement, and incompetence are squashed as soon as they rear their ugly heads.
If actual performance was a job requirement of an elected official everyone that I’ve seen would have been fired within the first week in office.
Accountability makes that happen. Politicians are not accountable to anyone in any meaningful way. The media was supposed to be the public watch dog but their corrupt incompetence prevents that from ever happening.
We were marched to the fiscal cliff by a band of incompetent cowards who are more concerned about their personal self interests than their obligations to the oath of office they take when they are elected.
This is the oath That Congressmen and Senators take. “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
The president takes this oath “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
At every opportunity this band of incompetent cowards failed to support or defend the Constitution. They failed to take the best action for the citizens of this country for today or for the future.
Difficult decisions have to be made and because of the fickle nature of the American voters, the men and women who make those decisions will almost certainly be thrown from office the next time they run for office. The oath of office they took requires that they take the action necessary to protect the tax payer not the elected official.
Everyone of the elected cowards if pushed would come up with a excuse why they failed to act responsibly back in the summer of 2011. Our current fiscal cliff is the result of their cowardice and irresponsibility back then; when their cowardice created this crisis.
Our media shares a significant share of the blame for the cowardice and self interest on the part of elected officials. Nowhere in today’s reporting is this financial crisis reported as a result of the elected officials failure to do their job.
The media doesn’t respect tax payers as the group elected officials are accountable to. The media doesn’t respect its obligation to be the watchdog for the tax payer.
I have seen a couple of articles that criticize the Constitution for the failures of our elected officials. They criticize the outdated system of government that limits how our government can act and an impact the tax payer.
The writers of those articles can see how the Constitution has limited the impact of an irresponsible government on the tax payer, but cannot see the cowardice and incompetence of elected officials who refuse to address the problems because they are worried that doing the right thing for the right reasons could keep them from being reelected.
Let’s review what we have seen so far:
Our elected officials have passed legislation that might soften the landing as we fall off the fiscal cliff.
The fiscal cliff is the result of the failures and cowardice of those same elected officials.
The media either doesn’t recognize the association of these events or chooses not to report them.
Some see the Constitution as the villain in this scenario because it limits how elected officials can negatively impact the lives and fiscal security of the tax payer.
The tax payers are the victims of this tragic story. The media is blind or incompetent, and anyone in an elected position must be voted out as soon as possible.
Politicians must go and Public Servants must come.
Happy New Year, let’s hope we survive it!
