Self Reliance and Unemployment Insurance

Self Reliance and Unemployment Insurance

Today a lot of people are discussing extending unemployment insurance even longer than they’ve been getting it. The argument to extend payments longer could be stronger if we had the money. The government’s broke and has to borrow whatever we decide to pay to anyone. The generosity of the legislators to extend payments to the unemployed shouldn’t  be allowed to dig a deeper hole for our depleted treasury.

If you have trouble putting food on your family’s table, are you in a position to give money to help feed widows and orphans? No you shouldn’t. You can’t allow yourself to fail to fulfill your own obligations no matter how great the need others have. The starving widows and orphans will have to get help from somewhere else. Does that sound cold? It’s not, those are prudent financial decisions. As the bread winner of a family you would be expected to make that kind of a decision. As the legislative body charged with spending public funds I would expect you to make those sorts of decisions and to make the right choices with our money, and don’t forget that it’s our money not yours. We, the tax payers, are not a bottomless pit that you can continually take from.

Many jobs aren’t coming back, many salaries will be lost. Some who earned a six figure income in the past will not see that sort of income for quite a while, if ever. Many of the unemployed will have to go in new directions and start at the bottom of a lot of new organizations and earn their way back up. It’ll be a difficult road to travel, but one that must be traveled by a lot of today’s unemployed. Jobs will come back and people will work, but in what industries and doing what tasks?

What’s the purpose of extending the payments? Will an extra six months help cause their old job to reappear? Will another six months cause them to be more competitive than most of the other unemployed who are competing for the same job? Probably not. The extended payments will dig a deeper hole in the public piggy bank and provide a crutch for the unemployed who may be avoiding making some hard choices.

The old job is gone, the old salary may also be gone, new opportunities must be explored. The new opportunities may be at the bottom of the salary and ego scales. The major portion of the unemployed have a great deal of skill and experience, but the old environments are gone. They’ll have to apply their skills in new environments and rise to higher  levels all over again. Is it fair? No, it isn’t, but life isn’t always fair. Life throws obstacles in our paths and we have to overcome them. We all have to live our lives and deal with whatever comes our way.

Surviving off a government extended benefit is a short term solution. It may also be the reason some of the hard choices aren’t being made. Self reliance is a character trait that made this country great. Self pity and dependency never accomplished anything. Self reliance makes you a leader and a role model.

Those who choose to sit back and wait for a job to appear that will replace the old salary and old status may be at a disadvantage to those who start sooner. Taking a job far below your skill and experience level will work out to the advantage of the employer and the employed. Promotional opportunities will appear and the more skilled and experience from that organization will get the opportunity. If you have to start back at the bottom, the sooner you start the sooner you’ll rise back to the top.

Self reliance is that quality that will give an individual the drive and desire to work hard at being independent and flexible. Self reliance will allow an individual to accept reality and accept new challenges. A self reliant individual will overcome obstacles faster than a dependant individual.

Quit digging a deeper hole in our depleted treasury. Allow the unemployed to look for new opportunities that may not look like the rest of their work history and experience. The sooner they have a steady paycheck the sooner they’ll get to be self reliant. The sooner they get a steady paycheck the sooner their disposable income will increase. That’s the stimulus we need to grow our economy.

Self Reliance works every time it’s tried,
