Memorial Day

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day. It used to be called Decoration Day. It’s the day when flags are placed on the graves of soldiers who gave their all for their country. People who want to demonstrate their respect and appreciation to brave men and women who fought for their country and lost their lives place a flag on the grave of the fallen heroes. I think that it’s appropriate at least once a year for someone to place a flag to honor the dead on their graves. They gave their life for that flag. They gave their life for us, those who remain, they fought so we won’t have to.
Why do so many men and women put themselves at risk for the rest of us? When they’re sent into a combat zone, they know they might be remembered the following May with a flag over their grave, but they go anyway to fight for us. They fight so we don’t have to. We are the last great superpower in the world, and our military is the strongest and the most effective in the world. And it is because of those men and women.
Originally the ones who were remembered on this day were the fallen Confederate soldiers. Their side lost that war, but every one of them fought and died for what they believed in. The Civil War was tragic and horrible, but it was necessary, we are now stronger and more united because of that war. They deserved to be remembered and honored for their service.
Those who fought and died on the Union side of that war also deserve to be honored for their sacrifice. Everyone who fought and died since the Civil War deserve to be remembered for their sacrifice to this Great Country. They fought for what they believed in. They fought for us. This country has been blessed with men and women of tremendous courage and character to stand tall and fight when asked to fight. The world is a dangerous place, it’s filled with people who have evil intent. There are people and even governments who do not, who will not play well with others.
Teddy Roosevelt had a simple Foreign Policy, “Speak Softly but carry a Big Stick” it was a very effective policy. Every playground needs one big boy on the block. Someone to set the rules and the standards of conduct for everyone to obey. Diplomacy is effective at times when dealing with those who live by the rules of diplomacy. Unfortunately the world has players in it who will say yes to your face but mean no to your back. When you negotiate with a bully and the bully is cooperative during the negotiations all seems well, but when the bully is deceptive and abusive and a menace to the region or the world then it’s time to stop negotiations and take some action. Some decisive and effective action. Action that results in the deployment of men and women of great courage and character.
Men and women who are willing to go into harm’s way and risk their lives for us will always be a part of our Great Country, regardless of the party of the Commander in Chief, regardless of the direction the Commander in Chief tries to take us. We are blessed with an abundance of individuals who recognize the need for service to our country, who are not afraid to take the risk and fight for those of us who stay behind.
On Memorial Day we should remember those who stood tall and risked their lives for us and in the process lost their lives so we can be free. As we look at what some of us see as a broken government with out of control spending and punishing taxes, we see a government that we think has ignored the will of the people and is taking us in a direction that we don’t want to go. Think of the men and women who fought and died for us to have this broken government and the opportunity to have free elections and redirect our government at the ballot box.
We owe those who have died for us the respect they deserve for their sacrifice and to prove that their sacrifice was not in vain. We must vote on Election Day. The Ballot Box is there because of their sacrifice, we must honor them by voting for what we believe in. Men and women of great courage and character died for us to have these freedoms, we must vote for men and women of equal courage and character. We must vote for individuals who stand tall and say what they mean and act on what they say.
We don’t need liars, cheats, and pretenders in elected office, we need men and women who have character and integrity. Thousands have sacrificed their lives for us to enjoy these freedoms, we must show them we respect their sacrifice and only vote for quality elected officials, not liars and cheats and puppets.
Think before you vote. Remember those who died protecting our right to vote before you pull the lever for some cheap hustler or opportunist. Those who have died deserve better from us.
