The following has been said about the democrats in congress “[T]he Democrats in Congress have taken tougher votes, have worked harder under more stressful circumstances, than just about any Congress in our memory. And they’ve done a great job and deserve reelection.” That’s probably a true statement, but why were the votes tougher than any in the past? Why were they more stressful? The answer should be clear. Those members of congress were elected by the voters in their districts. The voters in their districts opposed what they congressmen were voting for. When you vote against the will of the people who elected you, it’s possible you’ll feel some stress.
Most congressmen who voted against the will of the voters in their districts refuse to hold town hall meeting back home. They can’t hold these meetings because they’re afraid to face unhappy voters. The votes were difficult because they were allowing their strings to be pulled by special interests and party leaders against the will of the people they’re sworn to represent.
Some feel that the ability to disappoint the people you work with by showing flagrant disloyalty and disrespect to those who trusted you, should be rewarded by giving them more of an opportunity to be disloyal or to break the trust again? Honesty and loyalty are important qualities in life. I personally have a zero tolerance for that in elected officials.
The stress felt by the members of congress who felt stress, was due to the treachery they displayed to the world. The voters back home didn’t want them to vote for some bills that were not in the best interest of the voters. The congressmen were forced to obey special interests and party leaders who made some promises and some threats to coerce them to commit the treachery to their voters. Responsible voters will not reward treachery with trust. Why should they? Elected officials who feel more of an obligation to special interests and party leaders should be voted out of office. If I couldn’t trust you last year why should I trust you next year?
Congressmen who did not vote against the will of their electorates didn’t feel any stress. They were honorable and looked out for the best interests of the people who elected them and they all sleep well at night.
The stress felt by those who disappointed their voters, is just like the stress felt by a crack head who has to break into your house and steal from you to pay for their bad habit. If you want to reward the crack head keep your valuables in plain sight and never lock your door. Make their theft easier for them. If you like getting screwed by your elected officials keep voting them back into office. Look what a good job they have done for us so far.
