Leadership

Leadership

A leader sets the example for those who follow. A leader sets goals and objectives to provide followers some guidance and a purpose. A leader leads. Effective leaders are accountable for all that happens and all that fails to happen. Part of leadership is to dispense credit and commend followers for their achievement, and to accept the blame for all that fails. They should accept the blame because they failed to anticipate that problem and plan to mitigate that problem. Leaders are consistent, what they say today will be what they say tomorrow. Leaders want their followers to succeed and to get the credit for their accomplishments, the leader doesn’t need the credit for the accomplishment of the group. The leaders is satisfied with the successful results, they don’t need the credit for the success.
In today’s world we have some exceptional leadership and some less effective leadership on view that will be recorded by historians. One leader we have on the public stage right now campaigned against high taxes and wasteful spending. That leader is standing tall and living up to his campaign promises under very difficult circumstances. The media, special interests and his political opponents are challenging him publicly, but he’s standing his ground and keeping his word to the voters. He stands in front of his followers and says “Follow Me”. He leads them toward what they need and what they want.
Another leader on the public stage today is not leading as well. This leader does not stand tall and is not living up to the words he used during his campaign. Significant events occur and his impact is marginal or negative at best. Effective leaders encourage and cheer on their followers. They set the direction and provide encouragement and are part of the team that accomplished goals and challenges. Effective leaders don’t spend their time sharp shooting other leaders ideas and send blame all around for the failures. Leaders lead, they don’t blame and they don’t give excuses.
Leaders set the tone for the followers. Good leaders stay positive and create a positive environment where the followers are comfortable to try new and different approaches to solve difficult problems. No one ever overcame an obstacle when they went into the situation with a negative or defeated attitude. Leaders are cheer leaders they make their followers know that the end is in sight, and they can overcome that challenge. They use words like “we” and “us”. “We can do this?” I am here with you and I will overcome that obstacle with you” Both Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan have been credited with the following.“It is amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.” Effective Leaders believe this.
Leaders manage their resources to accomplish what needs to be accomplished. An effective leader is a resource for those who follow. Leaders are inspiration and comfort. Leaders will set the direction and the tone and the attitude of the group. As each small accomplishment is achieved they are cheered on and rewarded for the forward progress. The followers feel safe and have a comfortable feeling because they know their leader is there to lead them through the difficulties.
Leaders hit the high points of a situation and focus on the positive. The negative issues are addressed individually with the audience that needs to be exposed to the negative and that communication is offered in as positive as way as possible. You inspire people to improve or correct poor performance or bad behavior. You don’t use fear, or public chastisement to turn a negative into a positive. You lead a turnaround, through positive leadership not through cheap shots or manipulation. Leaders are honorable and selfless, not “me” oriented and self centered.
Leaders Lead, problems are solved when individuals overcome obstacles through team work and dedication. We work together to solve difficult problems and we get it done together. We don’t care who gets credit for the accomplishment as long as the problem is solved and the goal is achieved..
Problems are not solved as individuals are condemned in the media or chastised publicly. Teamwork is achieved through effective leadership. We all work together to accomplish things. We can do more together than you and I can do by ourselves. You can accomplish more when I empower you to achieve more and as I cheer you on and recognize your hard work and dedication under difficult circumstances.
Leaders lead, sharp shoots hide in the weeds as they criticize and condemn others as they attempt to achieve results under difficult circumstances.
We need more leaders and fewer sharp shooters.
